"Killing" the printtool process itself doesn't help, because it gets restarted and shows the same problem again: eating up CPU resources.
The device is an MFP, i.e. it's also a scanner, and what seems to help me here, is to "kill" the "Smart Panel" (AKA SPanel) process.
I couldn't find a recent driver update on Samsung's support pages.

using the Samsung SCX-4623F as a fax printer

After successfully setting up a big brother of this device, I was eager enough to finally get the fax printer feature of this devices (in my home office) successfully set up as well.
Downloaded their latest printing software, installed it, gave the fax printer a try, worked. Great!
Now I can finally transmit documents as fax through this device again. Love it.
